What is Natural Selection Surf?

Natural Selection trades the traditional contest format for something far more honest. No single venue, no priority system, no judges rewarding safe surfing in average surf. Instead, a small field of the world's best freesurfers is dropped into a remote stretch of coastline and given ten days to find and charge the best waves on offer.

Scoring uses the CREDO system — Creativity, Risk, Execution, Difficulty and Overall Impression. Mother Nature sets the stage. The surfers either rise to it or go home.

After a debut in Micronesia in 2025, the 2026 event heads to South Africa — a coastline that can deliver a 200-metre point break around one bend and a consequence-laden slab around the next. The event premieres September 25 on Red Bull TV and YouTube, free to watch.

Why South Africa?

South Africa's surf is one of the most underrated on the global stage. The Western Cape and Wild Coast deliver powerful, well-organised swells generated by the Southern Ocean — the same swell engine that powers Jeffreys Bay, one of the longest and most perfect right-hand point breaks on earth.

The coastline swings between long peeling points, open-ocean beach breaks and shallow slabs, often within kilometres of each other. It's exactly the kind of terrain that rewards the versatile, committed surfer that Natural Selection is designed for. Cold water, heavy waves, remote locations — no room for passengers.

The 2026 Lineup

Who to Watch

Eli Beukes is the name to watch. His intimate knowledge of South African reef breaks — the kind of heavy, unpredictable waves that punish unfamiliar visitors — makes him a genuine threat on home soil. Competing at home in front of a home crowd, on waves he's surfed his whole life, is a significant advantage in a format that rewards local knowledge.

On the women's side, Eden Walla at just 17 is the wild card. If the conditions get serious, she has already shown she belongs in heavy surf. Milla Brown will be hard to beat — champions rarely relinquish titles easily — but this field is deep enough that anyone could take it.

And then there's Mikey Wright — described by Surfer Magazine as "perhaps the most unpredictable surfer in the field." In a format that rewards going all-in, that unpredictability could be his biggest asset.
